Model United Nation

What is Model UN?

Model UN is one of the fastest-growing school activities in the world. Simply put, Model United Nations is a simulation activity for middle, high school, and college students that involves research, writing, public speaking and debate. At an MUN conference, students assume the role of a country, organization, or person and work together with others in their committee to find solutions to major world issues.

Why is it important for the students? and How does it helps in their education and life?

  • MUN makes kids better students – When a student attends a MUN conference they need to conduct research, write essays and speeches, and speak extemporaneously in front of large groups of people. Reading, writing, and speaking is the foundation of education. Through MUN, students enhance and improve their communication skills and critical thinking. They also learn about topics outside of the scope of their regular classes – from history to economics to public policy and beyond.
  • MUN looks good to colleges– Scholarships for MUN are still relatively rare and they don’t bring in the big bucks, but when a student has been a part of Model UN for several years they are not only showing that they are academically minded, but this signals that they likely have great social skills and confidence and that they are dedicated and passionate about changing the world for the better. This is the type of student that a college wants – someone that will not only succeed within their walls but that will go out into the world and succeed so that the school can say “They went here!”
  • MUN prepares students for success in their future career– MUN directly prepares students for careers in academia, law, politics, business, and other fields. It also indirectly prepares students for success in almost any area of work they choose to pursue, as Model UN teaches them how to interact with people in a professional manner, to work hard and be self-motivated, and to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • MUN helps students develop good interpersonal skills – When students take part in an MUN conference, their aim is to pass a resolution and that is not possible without working collaboratively with others. Through Model UN, students are able to hone their leadership skills, to learn how to build relationships with other students from all different walks of life, and to work as a part of a team. It also teaches students respect and how to disagree and handle conflict in an appropriate way.

At ISE, we prepare our students through consistent training and weekly MUN workshops including speaking skills, writing, and interpersonal skills.

G10 student’s testimonial:

During my experience at the MUN conference, I got to encounter new people and listen to new ideas about worldly issues that need discussion and a solution. We, as students, often overlook the fact that we have limiting viewpoints because of the commonalities that we share in our community. Whether that community is something small such as your family or friends, or something on a larger scale, such as a school or even a country, we have similar backgrounds that allow us to see solutions to problems in a particular way. MUN allowed us to practice researching and understanding distinct viewpoints from our designated countries and expand our knowledge, utilizing that when debating our topics. Overall it helped me gain knowledge and build up the confidence to talk in front of large groups of people, and I would recommend trying it out if you are interested. I hope MUN will inspire you the way it did to me.

Thank you.
