The International School Eastern Seaboard (ISE) is pleased to provide faculty and staff biographies.  We are very proud of our experienced professionals.  

A state of the art facility, an advanced curriculum, and highly qualified faculty enable our students to achieve scholastic excellence. The following distinguished educators were selected by ISE for their outstanding qualifications and for their proven ability to support and pay attention to each individual student.

Administration

Robert W. Brewitt, Superintendent/ Secondary School Principal

Dr. Brewitt has been associated with ISE since ISE was founded.  He became the fifth ISE superintendent in November of 2006.  

Rob and his wife, Jeannie, have been international educators since 1973.  They taught in  Norway, Belgium and  the  Netherlands.  Rob served as secondary school principal and then as school superintendent at the International School Bangkok (ISB) from 1983-1994.  He was instrumental in the building of the  new ISB campus in 1992 and the introduction of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. After leaving ISB, he was the head master of the Vienna International School (VIS) before returning to Thailand to join Northbridge Co.Ltd., a housing development company. Rob and Jeannie have two children. Peter is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Environmental Policy at the University of California, Santa Cruz while Anne is working as a Spa Director for the Four Seasons Hotel in Alexandria, Egypt.

Heather Naro, Elementary School Principal

Ms. Naro is originally from Ontario, Canada. This is her fourth year as the elementary  principal  at ISE.  Heather has a Bachelor of Education degree from McGill University, a Master degree of Administration from University of Ottawa and is completing a second Master degree from the University of San Franscico in Organization and Leadship. Her overseas education career began in 1992 and took her to Egypt, China, Saudi Arabia and Thailand. The Naros have two children who attend ISE, Justin, grade 7 and Sydney, grade 5.

Andrew McDermid, Secondary School Coordinator, English and French teacher

Mr. McDermid graduated with a teaching degree; from the University of Durham, England. Andrew taught high school for more than twenty years in London, before moving to Thailand. He is currently teaching English and French and is the secondary school coordinator. Andrew also deals with student admissions. He enjoys watching, playing and coaching a range of sports.

Elementary Teachers

Marina Rossi Fleming, Pre- Kindergarten Teacher

Ms. Fleming was born in Milan, Italy. She acquired a university diploma in Japanese language and culture and also has a diploma in Early Childhood from the London Montessori Centre. Marina taught kindergarten for eight years at the Montessori Children's Centre in Pattaya. She has taught Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 at ISE for the last ten years. She is currently completing an online course with the University of Venice, (CA’ Foscari) teaching Italian to foreigners. Marina speaks Italian, English, Spanish, French, some Japanese and Thai. Ruth Ann Rochanaroon, Pre-Kindergarten Teacher

Ms. Rochanaroon received a Bachelor of Science in Family Life and Child Development from the University of the Philippines and is working on her Master of Early Childhood Education degree. A licensed elementary teacher from the Philippines, she taught Pre-K and kindergarten since 2000. She taught Grades 1 and 2 at Assumption College, Sri Racha prior to joining ISE in 2007. Margaret Grainger, Kindergarten  Teacher

Ms. Grainger, an Australian, has lived in Thailand for eleven years. She graduated from McAuley College in Brisbane in 1989. She holds a Bachelor degree and a postgraduate degree in religious education. Margaret specialized in early education for most of her career. She enjoys scuba diving and mountain bike riding through Thailand, cooking, cross-stitch and teaching Sunday school classes at church. Lawrence (Larry) Schultz, Grade 1 Elementary Teacher

Mr. Schultz, an American, joined ISE in 2008. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the North Carolina School of the Arts and a Master of Music degree from the University of Houston. Larry has taught early childhood and elementary school for fourteen years. He spent eight years teaching music at the university level. His most recent teaching assignment was in Yangon, Myanmar, where he taught first grade. Larry enjoys playing guitar, riding the unicycle and bicycle, juggling, reading, kayaking, hiking, chess, yoga and traveling. This is his fourth year teaching at ISE. Marina

Lydia Giannakopoulou, Grade 2 Elementary Teacher

Ms.Giannakopoulou was born and raised in Athens, Greece. She has spent most of her adult life overseas. Along with elementary and ESL certification, she holds a Master of Arts in education from the UK and a degree in drama. Alan Walmsley, Grade 3 Elementary Teacher

Mr. Walmsley has lived in Thailand for sixteen years having taught grade 3 and 4 at the New International School in Bangkok Thailand for ten years and middle school Language Arts/Social Studies at Ruamrudee International School for four and a half years. Alan received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a Diploma of Education from Monash University in Australia. His main interests outside of teaching have been photography, reading, Australian Rules Football and watching movies. Benjamin Reiber, Grade 4 Elementary Teacher

Mr. Reiber is teaching fourth grade. He comes to ISE with 10 years of teaching experience from Seattle, Washington. Benjamin has taught second, third, fourth and fifth grade students. Bill Hartz, Grade 5 Elementary Teacher

Mr. Hartz, an American, received his Master of Education degree from the University of Michigan and taught in the area before going overseas. Bill has taught in various international schools in Libya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia. Watchara Lertsuwanwong, 1-5 Thai and Art Teacher

Khun Watchara (Jim) has been working at ISE since 1995 as a teacher assistant in kindergarten and grade 2. She has taught Thai art for MS students and Thai Culture class. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ramkhamheang University. She received a teaching certificate from Sukhothaithammatiraj University and is a MOE certified teacher. Jintana Ong-On, K-5 Thai Teacher

Khun Jintana graduated from Thammasat University, Thailand and Fordham University, USA with a Master in Social Work degree. She has a Thai teaching degree from the Rajchapat Suandusit Institution and subsequently earned a Thai teaching degree from Sukho Thaithummathiraj University. In 2001 she joined the ISE Thai program. Jason Muccino, K-5 Music and Art Teacher

Mr. Muccino, an American, has been teaching music for fourteen years, both in the U.S. and overseas. He received a Bachelor of Music from William Patterson University and is currently working on a Master of Educational Leadership at New Jersey City University. His most recent teaching positions were in Malaysia and China. He is now very excited to be in Thailand. Aside from teaching music, he is quite involved in volunteerism, having developed programs with schools, orphanages and wildlife centers in many locations worldwide, including Indonesia, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Ghana, Brazil, and in Thailand. Maria Pannakan, ESL Teacher

Ms. Pannakan is originally from England but has been living and working in Thailand for 14 years. Maria previously taught at Assumption School in Sriracha. Kanokwan Sridabundit (Khun Gade) has been working at ISE for 7 years. Born and raised in Sriracha, Khun Gade comes from a family of 7 children she has graduated from Rajabhat Institute in Bangkok and Masters degree from King Mongkut University, Thailand. John Pahls, K-12 Librarian

Mr. Pahls holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of Cincinnati and the a Master of Library Science degree from Kent State University. In his library career, John has worked for two organizations, the Rocky River Public Library in suburban Cleveland, Ohio. He has served as a reference librarian, technology trainer, and most recently in the IT department as a computer services specialist. During his time with Maryknoll he worked for two years in Phnom Penh, Cambodia developing a Learning Resource Center. This is John’s third year at ISE. He is excited to be working at ISE to develop its libraries, and views the library and effective information searching as a crucial dimension for providing quality education. John’s interests include traveling, reading, writing, watching movies and playing various sports.

Amanda Garrett, Reading/ESL teacher

Mrs. Garrett is excited to be joining the ISE team starting with the 2010-2011 school year. She will be the new reading Specialist as well as teaching ESL. Mrs. Garrett was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado USA where she attended the University of Southern Colorado and received her Bachelor of Science degree and Elementary Certification. For three years, Mrs. Garrett taught grade 1 in Pueblo, Colorado. In 2004, Mr. and Mrs. Garretts careers took them to Shanghai, China where they taught at an international school for five years. In 2009, Mrs. Garrett received her Masters of Education degree with an emphasis in Reading from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. Mrs. Garrett enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, scuba diving, reading and going for walks.

Barbara Alexander, 6-10 ESL Teacher

Originally from the U.S., Ms. Alexander grew up attending international schools in Brazil, Taiwan, and Afghanistan. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Molecular Biology from Wellesley College, a degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Science degree in Community Health Education from Old Dominion University, and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Teaching from Michigan State University. After working for 20 years as a physical therapist, Ms. Alexander moved to Thailand with her family and in 1999 became a teacher at ISE. She is married to Somkid and they have two daughters who are both graduates of ISE.

Jeremy Lees, 6-10 ESL Teacher

Mr. Lees is from Lancashire, England. He graduated from Salford University, England with an Honors Degree in Economics. He also holds a University of Cambridge Royal Society of Arts teaching diploma. Jeremy has worked in England, Australia, Japan and Thailand. He joined ISE in April 2006. In his free time, Jeremy enjoys most outdoor sports particularly soccer, golf, swimming, hiking and cricket.

Trevor Jones, English/Social Studies Teacher

Mr. Jones obtained an Honors degree in Biblical Studies from the University of Cardiff in 1968 and his Post Graduate Certificate of Education from Birmingham University in 1970. After twenty-nine years teaching in the UK., he moved to Thailand in 1999. He came to ISE after three years of teaching at another local international school. His hobbies are tennis, squash, chess, and badminton.

Kristen Knudsen, English/Social Studies Teacher

Ms. Knudsen is from Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She graduated from Queen’s University and received a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) degree and a Bachelor of Education in Intermediate/Senior Education. She began teaching overseas in Cairo, Egypt where she spent four years and met her American husband, Daniel. Together they taught in Switzerland and are happy joining the staff at ISE. Kristen enjoys many activities including swimming, writing, scuba diving, basketball, cooking, traveling and reading. Her newest challenge is trying to learn how to play golf with her husband.

Timothy Garrett, Mathematics/ Science and PE teacher

Mr. Garrett started his teaching career as a video game design instructor in his hometown of Pueblo, Colorado in the United States before heading overseaswith his wife, Amanda Garrett, and spending five years at the Shanghai Community International School in China. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems from the University of Southern Colorado and is currently working on a Masters of Education through Jones International University with an emphasis on secondary Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. The Garretts have two children, Quince age 3 who attends ISE and Trace, age 1. When Mr. Garrett is not teaching, he enjoys running, snowboarding, GPS hobbies, photography, and mountain biking and traveling!

Michael Headley, English, Math and Drama Teacher

Daniel Knudsen, MS/HS Math Teacher

Mr. Knudsen is from Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Mathematics Education in 1991. His international career includes: Honduras (two years), Brazil (five years), Egypt (8 years), Switzerland (one year) and now two years here in Thailand. He enjoys a multitude of sports and activities, most notably golf, scuba diving, strategy games, and swimming. He and Kristen have been happily married for three years.

Richard Mullaney, Mathematics/IB Mathematics/Physics Teacher

Mr. Mullaney is originally from South Dakota, USA. He attended South Dakota State University and received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in physics. He joined the US Peace Corps and served as a teacher in Nigeria. Later, he worked as a physicist for IBM for three years. He earned Master of Arts and Master of education degrees at Teachers’ College, Columbia University in the department of mathematics and science Education. He has worked internationally in a variety of countries with the Peace Corps, USAID, and UNICEF. Richard has two grown children and three grandchildren. He has worked as a teacher in Thailand for nine years.

Heather Murray, MS/HS Science & IB Biology Teacher

Ms. Murray was born in Niagara Falls, Canada. She received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Western Ontario and a Masters in Education from; Youville College in New York State. Heathers first international teaching experience was in South Korea where she taught ESL. Her most recent teaching experience was in England teaching High School Science and Biology. Heather is extremely excited to be in Thailand where she will enjoy all the outdoor activities and travel experiences the country has to offer.

Timothy Overacker, Social Studies teacher/IB Coordinator

Originally from Oregon, Mr. Overacker attended University of California, Berkeley, majoring in geography. After teaching for several years and obtaining a Master of Education degree, he began teaching overseas. At ISE he has taught a range of grades and subjects and is currently the IB coordinator and teaches Theory of Knowledge and Information Technology in a Global Society. He has two school age children Bala and Neel.

Mitch Naro, Social Studies/IB Psychology Teacher

Mr. Naro is from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from New Mexico State University and a Master of Education from the University of New Mexico. He has taught in Saudi Arabia, China and Egypt. He introduced and taught IB psychology in each of these three international schools. Mitch has also taught IB history and middle school social studies. His interests include golfing, jogging and water sports.

John Murray, Spanish / Social Studies Teacher

Mr. Murray has been teaching in Thailand for the past nine years. John comes from San Diego, California where he graduated with honors from the University of San Diego. He holds a Bachelor of Diversified Liberal Arts (Spanish) degree and a bilingual (Spanish-English) multiple-subject teaching credential (K-6), and a Spanish language teaching credential. He enjoys free diving, surfing, foreign languages, travel, cooking, painting, and playing music.

Dr. Min Ae Yang IB Korean / Korean For Koreans Teacher

Dr. Yang was born and grew up in Masan, Gyeonsangnamdo Province; she received her Master of Education degree (Korean) at Yousei University and completed her Ph.D in Korean Studies, emphasizing Korean Education & Culture at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul. Prior to coming to ISE, she taught university-level non-Koreans the Korean language at home and abroad for 12 years, including 5 years at Criova University in Romania and Burapha University in Thailand. Dr. Yang loves exploring other cultures and customs and relaxes while painting, reading and traveling.

Takashi Kakizaki, Japanese Teacher

Mr. Kakizaki comes from Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Japan in 2001. He has taught at the Weekend School for Japanese in Sriracha, as a Japanese teacher since 2004. His hobbies are skiing, badminton, computer, acting and traveling

Kristina Solheim, Spanish/ PE/Health Teacher

Ms. Solheim has been teaching overseas for 25 years. She has a Master in Arts (Spanish) degree and she is certified from the University of Arizona to teach PE, ESL and Spanish. She has a daughter, Krysia, attending the University of Arizona in Tucson. She has taught in the US, Greece, Nicaragua, Thailand (ISB), Cyprus, Venezuela and Qatar. During her free time she loves traveling, reading, swimming, windsurfing and hiking.

Megan Eastlake, 6-12  IT Coordinator/Computer Teacher

Ms. Eastlake comes from Melbourne, Australia and was a university teacher for Melbourne University Creative Media program, and Deakin Universities IT Unit. She has over seven years experience in the Multimedia and IT industry and has worked for television, and the ABC Broadcasting corporations New media Asia Pacific Unit, where she was producing Online news, arts, and political content for the Asia Pacific regions. Megan earned her degree at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia in the Media Studies/Digital Media department. She most recently completed her Master in Education degree from Assumption University, Thailand.

Joseph Marchione, 6-12 Music Teacher

Joseph Marchione comes to ISE after teaching music for two years in Taiwan. He holds a Masters degree in Music Education from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois, and a Masters in Music Composition from Texas State University. Mr. Marchione brings a wealth of educational experience to ISE, having taught at the elementary, secondary, and college levels for a number of years. The unique approach that he takes toward music pedagogy allows students to gain hands-on musical experience and produce original compositions that incorporate various facets of their individual creativity.

Sheila Murthy, 6-12 Art Teacher

Sheilah Murthy received her Bachelors from the University of Texas and Masters from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has created arts integrated curricular experiences from pre-school to college. At her last assignment in Taiwan, Ms. Murthy developed the Art program and humanities citizenship courses. Now at ISE, Ms. Murthy is excited to be working with a great group of students, faculty and parents in such a beautiful and fascinating place. When not engaged in sharing her passion for producing inter disciplinary art and events for educational and philanthropic purposes she simply loves being with her family (especially her 6th grade daughter!) who has roots in India, Italy, The Philippines, Korea, and Lebanon.

M.L. Parat Charuchinda, Thai Teacher

M.L. Parat Charuchinda began teaching Thai for Thai students at ISE in January 2001. She obtained her Bachelor of Law degree from Ramkamhang University. After graduation, she joined a law firm and became a barrister-at-law. Subsequently, she earned an Honors degree in Education majoring in teaching Thai. She started her teaching career at Rajini School, in, a private girls’ school where she taught for eleven years. Her last position at that school was as head of the Thai section. Before teaching at ISE, she spent 10 years as the managing director of the Foundation for the Welfare of the Disabled under the Royal patronage of H.R.H. the Princess Mother.

Prae Charuchinda, Thai Teacher 

Khun Prae received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Durakij Bundit University. She also holds a Bachelor degree in Education from Sukothaithummathiraj University. She worked for several years at ISE as a teacher assistant in Pre-K. She is a Thai teacher for Middle School this year.
