On Thursday 28th January 38 MRISA athletes traveled Vietnam and Cambodia to compete in 2 different MRISA tournaments. The Middle School volleyball team headed to ISHCMC, Vietnam, while the High School footballers’ destination was ISPP, Cambodia. Both groups can be proud of their efforts and behavior. They were a credit to ISE both on and off the field of play and returned with many fantastic memories of sporting endeavor and camaraderie.

MRISA Senior Football at ISPP Cambodia
January 28-31
Our senior football teams traveled to Phnom Penh to close out their seasons. All players and coaches returned inspired and tired from what proved to be a very friendly, well organized and competitive tournament.
Girls give their all in tough round robin
Although it was disappointing to see only 5 teams in the girls event, ISE can take pride in the fact that our presence kept up ISE’s 100% attendance rate at MRISA tournaments since the one sport MRISA format was introduced last year. Only 3 other MRISA schools can boast such a record. With VIS, HIS and NISC not taking part, ISE girls faced a tough challenge against traditional powerhouses UNIS, ISPP, ISHCMC and SSIS. Coach Jones also had called on 4 middle school girls (Callie, Sarah, Kanari and Elizabeth) to fill out his squad.
Despite all this the girls displayed amazing spirit in the opening games against UNIS and ISHCMC. These were both very strong teams, yet in each match ISE girls created many chances, but just couldn’t score, and so ended day one with 2 losses on what proved to be a busy day for our goalkeeper May.
The girls bounced back on Saturday and dominated the game against SSIS. However failure to score again proved costly as a mix up in defence right on half time handed SSIS an unlikely 1-0 win.
The final match was against hosts and eventual champions ISPP and at last a GOAL as Elizabeth finally hit the net to equalize at 1-1. The girls eventually lost 4-1, but put in a tremendous effort against one of the strongest girls football teams we have seen at MRISA. Ellen played this last game in goal as replacement for the injured May. Ellen made a string of fine saves and so confirmed her place in the Tournament All – Star team.

Boys miss out in “Group of Death”
The ISE boys arrived with a reputation, having finished 2nd in last season’s tournament at UNIS. However, it was going to be tough this time as they found themselves in the “Group of Death” along with hosts ISPP, the improving VIS and the ever-strong ISHCMC. A disappointing 1-0 loss to ISPP was followed by an unlucky 1-1 draw with VIS. Our middle school star Alex Lenk put ISE into a deserved lead, then we had a number a chances to go two up, only to see VIS bundle over a late equalizer.
So a win was needed in the final group game against ISHCMC, who also needed to win. It turned into one of the best games of the tournament. Alex again gave ISE the lead, but ISHCMC pulled one back in the second half and the last 10 minutes was end to end excitement as both teams battled for the winner. Neither found it, so VIS and ISPP advanced to the Cup semis while ISE and ISHCMC were to re-meet in the plate final.
To get there, ISE won an exciting penalty shootout with SSIS, as a save from keeper Zach was follwed bygreat penalties from Tilmann, Oh and Ta. We lost the final 1-0 as tiredness finally caught up with a team which had played most of the tournament without injured captain Perm. However, Tilmann proved to be an amazing replacement as the ISE skipper. He certainly came of age in this tournament where he celebrated his 18th birthday as a very deserving member of the Tournament All star team.
Tournament round-up:
Girls: Champions ISPP, Runners Up UNIS
(ISE 5th All tournament star team – Ellen Ko)
Boys: Champions ISPP, Runners Up UNIS,
(ISE Plate finalists All tournament star team – Tilmann Kaiser)
MIDDLE SCHOOL MRISA VOLLEYBALL
ISE EAGLES SOAR IN SAIGON
The MRISA Junior Volleyball Tournament was at ISHCMC in Saigon on Jan. 29-30. The format for both boys and girls was a 7 team round-robin stage allowing every team to play each other with the top two advancing to the grand final.
BOYS DIVISION
The ISE boys started out in grand style on Friday beating the ISHCMC B team in 2 sets to win the match. They went on to win one other match that day against UNIS. On Saturday they had two very competitive matches in which they played very well but lost.
So ISE Boys got 5th place but they played well and there was a great deal of improvement from all of them. Between Smile’s hard driven serves, Jean’s diving after the balls and Rich’s captaincy keeping the team together, it was a difficult choice for the MRISA all tournament player. The final decision was team captain Jean for our all star player.
It was a great tournament and all the
players showed great sportsmanship. Ms. Kristina and Dr. Brewitt were very proud to have been their coaches. The team also contributed 1,000 baht to the school Haiti fund from the number of sets that they won.
GO FLYING, EAGLES!!
GIRLS DIVISION
The ISE girls opened strongly winning all four matches on Friday in two sets in dominating fashion. The other teams had no answer to ISE’s dominant serving and team play.
On Saturday morning our girls defeated the then four and zero home team ISHCMC in three close sets. This set up a must win match against 4 and 1 SSIS in order to avoid a possible three way tie for the final. The girls battled and won another close game in 3 sets to go undefeated and become the number one seeded team going into finals later in the afternoon; a re-match against the host school ISHCMC.
The final was again close and nerves got to our servers as lost the first set by 3 points. They played another hard fought second set and lost by four points. It was a very difficult loss as they had not lost a game all season until the MRISA final. Coach Reiber was very proud of what they achieved and the girls should also be very proud of themselves as they came very close to a perfect season. Well done, Eagles!
Tournament Summary:
Boys: Champions ISPP, Runners Up ISPP (ISE 5th , All tournament team player - Jean)
Girls: Champions ISHCMC, Runners Up ISE. (All tournament team players –
Emilia and Eun Young).
The ISE Junior basketball squads completed a very successful and enjoyable Junior MRISA tournament at NISC, Cambodia, Nov 26-28. The girls played superb basketball throughout winning 4 games and losing just 2 to earn a well deserved 3rd place. Meanwhile the boys rallied after a tough opening day to win both games on day 2 and so secure the title of plate (consolation) winners.
So close yet so far for ISE Girls
With 7 teams competing in the girls tournament, the format was an all play all round-robin, with the top two advancing to the grand final. In hot conditions on an outdoor court ISE girls opened strongly with early wins over ISHCMC (26-16) and NISC (8-7). A 7-21 loss to eventual champions SSIS followed, before the ISE girls closed a long, hot opening day with a brave 16-6 victory over VIS.
Saturday morning saw our girls defeat the ever strong UNIS to set up a showdown with ISPP. With both teams locked on 4 wins, the winners would meet SSIS in the final. And how close we came! SSIS fouled and fouled again, but still ISE came up just short, eventually losing 15-18. The inevitable tears flowed, but the girls and Coach Reiber should be proud of what they achieved. They deserved a place in the final, but as we all know, sometimes sport can be cruel.
Boys fightback for the ‘Plate’ Title
Eight teams contested the boys event, so the familiar 2 group format was used with the top two teams in each going on to contest the Championship, leaving the rest to compete for the plate event. That’s where our boys were heading after Friday group losses to ISHCMC (9-16) very strong hosts and runners up NISC A (10-20), and VIS by just a single last minute basket (17-15).. So it was time to re-group and target the consolation pool. All looked lost in the semi against UNIS with a minute to go and down by 3 points. But a fantastic steal and lay-up basket from Alex gave ISE hope before Mike fired in the winner as the clock ran down to secure an amazing (10-9) comeback victory. Coach Diego handed the coaching duties to Mr.Lees for the rematch with VIS in the consolation Final. It proved an inspired move as Mr. Lees high –fived Diego’s boys to a comprehensive 27-12 victory and the title of Consolation Winners.

ISE All tournament Team Player - Alex lenk |
The Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA) was formed in 1998, and ISE joined in 2001. MRISA governs sports tournaments, cultural and leadership exchanges held between its member schools. The eight MRISA schools are:
Six MRISA sports tournaments are held throughout each school year, allowing MRISA Middle School and High School athletes to compete internationally in basketball, soccer and volleyball. These tournaments provide opportunities for students from different schools in our region to come together, play sport and make new friends. Participants enjoy safe, organized and competitive matches while developing friendships and improving their skills and appreciation of sport.
A MRISA Cultural Exchange takes place once a year and alternates between member schools. Each cultural exchange has a specific theme which provides the focus for the workshops and performances presented.
The MRISA Leadership Summit is in its third year and brings together student leaders from the eight schools. The weekend is dedicated to developing leadership skills through workshops and a community service project.
MRISA is sponsoring a Model United Nations program that is hosting in Hanoi. The assembly will have the students from the eight schools role play United Nations delegates while proposing and debating resolutions based on each year’s theme.
