Participation in sport is an integral part of the overall program at ISE. All our students should be involved in some athletic endeavor in addition to their classes, clubs and activities.
The school is a member of the Mekong Region International Schools Association (MRISA). Membership in this group of eight schools allows ISE students to participate in international tournaments three times each year. The program includes middle and high school teams for both girls and boys. Additionally the school participates in the Eastern Seaboard Athletic Conference (ESAC). This affords our students a chance to compete in games and tournaments with the other International schools in our region.
In addition to the middle and high school students, the ESAC program includes students in the elementary school. Student participation in sport at ISE has increased significantly in recent years, with many of our students playing on teams that represented our school, both locally and internationally. Each of our seasons culminates with participating in MRISA tournaments with schools from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
We have had championship teams in: elementary swimming, boys’ soccer, middle school co-ed volleyball and girls’ volleyball.
Irrespective of score lines or outcomes, participating in sports can, in itself, be reward enough. Here at ISE, we encourage each of our students to develop her/his character and personality by demonstrating qualities such as stamina, commitment, determination and a sense of fair play. These virtues can then be applied to other aspects of life away from the sporting areas and help make them responsible global citizens.
The Mekong River International Schools Association (MRISA) was formed in 1998, and ISE joined in 2001. MRISA governs sports tournaments, cultural and leadership exchanges held between its member schools.
The eight MRISA schools are:
. United Nations International School of Hanoi (Vietnam)
. Hanoi International School (Vietnam)
. International School of Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam)
. Saigon South International School (Vietnam)
. International School of Phnom Penh (Cambodia)
. Vientiane International School (Laos)
. Northbridge International School of Cambodia (Cambodia)
. International School Eastern Seaboard (Thailand)
Six MRISA sports tournaments are held throughout each school year, allowing MRISA Middle School and High School athletes to compete internationally in basketball, soccer and volleyball. These tournaments provide opportunities for students from different schools in our region to come together, play sport and make new friends. Participants enjoy safe, organized and competitive matches while developing friendships and improving their skills and appreciation of sport.
A MRISA Cultural Exchange takes place once a year and alternates between member schools. Each cultural exchange has a specific theme which provides the focus for the workshops and performances presented. The MRISA Leadership Summit is in its third year and brings together student leaders from the eight schools. The weekend is dedicated to developing leadership skills through workshops and a community service project. MRISA is sponsoring a Model United Nations program that is hosting in Hanoi. The assembly will have the students from the eight schools role play United Nations delegates while proposing and debating resolutions based on each year's theme.

Junior Football at ISE, February 9-12
It may seem a long time away, but we are already planning for the Middle School Football MRISA to be held here at ISE from February 16-19. The Senior Football tournament last February was a wonderful event that truly united the ISE community.
We are greatly looking to another fantastic festival of football and friendship as we once begin our preparations to host our MRISA guests.
We will keep you updated with our preparations and on the progress of each team as they practice and train for their MRISA tournaments. You can follow the sports news from ISE through regular features in the ISE Express and on the ISE website.
MRISA Senior Football at ISE
A Festival of Football, Sportsmanship and Friendship
February 10-13, 2001 saw MRISA sport return to ISE after a 2 year break. All eight MRISA schools were represented as 160 high school footballers from 37 different countries played 40 matches throughout the course of the tournament. It proved to be magical weekend that provided unforgettable memories the players, fans, coaches, organizers, officials, parents and host families alike.
The ISE teams were lead by two wonderful captains from our Seniors; Andreia and Tilmann. Here’s what they had to say about it all:
“For a school that had never hosted a Soccer MRISA before, ISE couldn’t have done it any better. From the parade of the schools in the beginning to the Awards Party on the last night, ISE was always at its best and the students’ smiles and excitement most certainly proved that. The three stadiums had ongoing games through the two days. The grounds were filled with parents, teachers, and students who supported both the home teams and the others. Throughout the two days there were some intense moments, moments of victory and unavoidably moments of failure. However, with the spirit that was created on the field and outside too, no one left a loser. Every student that participated returned back home with new friends, new accomplishments and unforgettable memories which made them all champions!”
Andreia Kristensen (Girls Team Captain)
“In the past, the ISE boy’s football team has not had the luck they deserve. The boys have reached the finals two times now, and both times had intense games but didn't quite win. Without question, this is still an amazing achievement from a small sized school. As captain of the 2011 boys football team, and member of the high school team since grade 8, it has been a privilege to be part of the team and play along side my fellow friends. ISE is the football team that has never given up at all throughout a game, and always fought back with no less than 100%. All the ISE players should all be proud of their achievements through this year. I would personally like to thank on behalf of the team, Mr. Lees for being an excellent coach. We couldn’t have done it without you. Well done boys, solid year, and good luck to all the players who will be here next year.”
Tilmann Kaiser (Boys Team Captain)
Here is how the action unfolded for the ISE teams:
Friday: ISE Boys top Group B
The ISE boys’ team got off to a flying start with back to back 2-0 wins over NISC and SSIS. So, 2 goals from team captain Tilmann, one from Marcelo and one from Alex proved enough to put ISE on top of group B despite a loss to UNIS in the final group game. Ta’s thunderbolt goal for ISE in this game was perhaps one of the goals of the tournament.
In the girls’ tournament, the ISE girls had mixed fortunes as a 3-1 defeat to SSIS was followed by a 7-0 win over HIS, before a 6-0 loss to an outstanding ISPP team confined the home team to the plate event. Hat-tricks for Elisabeth and Kanari plus a goal from Callie were some consolation for the girls’ team. UNIS and ISHCMC were the top 2 teams in the other girls group.
Saturday: Boys finish Cup Runners Up, Girls win the Plate
The ISE girls hit form on Saturday, as goals from Elisabeth (2), Andreia, Kanari and Callie gave them a 5-0 win over a spirited and popular MRISA United team. Captain Andreia’s left foot strike was especially memorable. Elisabeth then struck her 6th goal of the tournament in the plate final against VIS and so secured the plate trophy for the host school. The Girls Championship was deservedly won by the amazing ISPP team whose 4-0 win over UNIS in the final gave them a record of P 5, W 5, GF 35, GA 0 – Staggering!
The boys semi-final between hosts ISE and defending champions ISPP became the game of the tournament, as an end to end match left the teams locked on 1-1 after golden goal extra time. And who will ever forget the penalty drama as 3 amazing saves from ISE keeper Alec and 3 goals from 5 attempts (Tilmann, Kengo and goalkeeper Alec) gave Marcelo the chance to strike the winning sudden death penalty.
The final brought an ISE vs. UNIS rematch. The ISE boys fought hard, but without the injured Ta found this one game too many and so lost 2-0 to the deserving champions UNIS, Hanoi. The ISE boys team should be proud of their achievement in giving the host school fans so much enjoyment and excitement throughout the weekend.
In true MRISA spirit, three ISE girls joined the HIS team, whilst four more ISE girls combined with ISPP and ISHCMC girls to form the MRISA United Girls team. This was the first MRISA this idea had been tried and what a success it was as the girls became truly united throughout the tournament to deservedly win the girls sportsmanship award. The boys award went to ISPP for their dignity in defeat after 2 agonizing penalty shoot out losses.
A huge thank-you must go out to all who helped make this the amazing event it became. So to everyone from the PTA… to the host families….to the volunteers… to the ball boys and girls… THANK YOU ALL.
